About

A small shop on North Central, doing this the long way.

Andante Hair Studio is a full-service hair salon in Portage Park. Not a chain, not a franchise — a neighborhood studio where the same hands are behind the chair week after week.

The name

Andante is a tempo marking in music: a walking pace. Unhurried, but going somewhere. That is a fair description of how a haircut goes here. Nobody is rushing you out of the chair to hit a quota, and nobody is stretching a twenty-minute cut into an hour either.

What that looks like in practice

You get asked what you want before the scissors come out. If what you are asking for will not work with your hair, you get told honestly, and offered something that will. If it will work, you get it — and you get it the same way the next time you come in, because the person who cut it remembers.

The studio cuts women's, men's and children's hair, which means a family does not have to make two stops. Kids are welcome. So is the parent who has not had a real haircut since the last time their kid did.

The reviews

Andante holds a 5.0 rating across 36 Google reviews, and the Facebook page runs about 90% recommended. Those numbers were not bought and they were not chased — they came from people on the Northwest Side who kept coming back and eventually said so.

The neighborhood

Andante sits at 3451 N Central Ave, in Portage Park on Chicago's Northwest Side — a few blocks north of Belmont, right where Portage Park meets Belmont Cragin along the Belmont-Central corridor. Most of the people in these chairs live within a few miles of them.

Come sit down

Tuesday through Saturday, 10am to 6pm, at 3451 N Central Ave #1.
